Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church and School has been doing mission trips to Peru since 2005 serving and helping those in need.  In 2006, we visited a small town in the heart of the Andes called Tarma.  We were warmly welcomed and embraced by the community and our hearts were united in service and care.  After a week of service the very first Lutheran worship service was held with nearly 200 people in attendance.  Worship was uplifting, fun and full of praises to God.  When we left, we exclaimed, “We’ll be back!”

In 2007, we were unable to return to Tarma due to safety concerns.  Finally, in 2008 we were able to send 20 mission trip participants back to Tarma to begin a permanent Lutheran presence.  Lutheran Social Services of Tarma (“LSST”) will be place of spiritual care and a service agency assisting those in need.  Although it will take some time for planning, assessing the needs and discerning how to provide the best care, we are well underway!

In the summer of 2009 a mission team traveled to Tarma & Huancal.  We spent several days using our gifts to help those in need.  Feeding the hungry, providing shelter for those without, caring for the sick, giving glasses to those having trouble with sight, helping students in a nearby school by building a classroom, playground equipment and purchasing some computers. Our ministry extends into the hills and nearby towns sharing God’s love and care.

In 2010 the mission work continued to reach people and transform lives! We are blessed with the opportunity to work in some of the surrounding communities of Tarma. God is not only using us to serve, but He is gathering a great team of volunteers in Tarma!

In 2011 we dedicated a new church to the Glory of God and installed a mission Pastor to tend the flock!

In 2015 we dedicated a new church building and property to the Glory of God and are now developing the mission as a place to learn and hear about the Good News of Jesus Christ and discover ways to use God’s gifts for His glory!

Check out the development photos below.  The ministry has begun and will continue to develop. Thanks be to God!
